"Mr President, I have never heard such rubbish as that spoken by the last Member. The Irish Presidency has been extremely good. Even Angela Merkel paid tribute to it in terms of the number of dossiers that have been got over the line: the common agricultural policy, common fisheries policy and 80 dossiers that were lying there for years. But I am not going to dwell on the Irish Presidency because it has been enormously successful. The late General de Gaulle had a dream that one day we would have a united Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals. We are the ones on the Atlantic and this week we had a very significant occasion when that flag over there – the Croatian flag – joined the European Union. So we are getting there; we are on the way from the Atlantic to the Urals. Serbia, Kosovo and so on are all lined up to enjoy membership of the European Union. I want to wish the Lithuanian Presidency every success. Here, we have a proud state with a long history – very traditional – that for many years was locked in the icy grip of Moscow and is now a proud member of the European Union and will be leading the European Union for the next six months. Lithuania, we wish you well."@en1
