"I support and commend workers and communities that come together to provide essential jobs, services and goods for themselves and their communities. They are often doing so due to the failure of the private market to satisfy their basic needs. I believe that support for cooperatives from the state, while welcome in many cases, cannot be used to obviate the state’s responsibility to guarantee the right to work and decent public services for all. This report presents the establishment of cooperatives as a solution to mass redundancies and to the economic crisis in general. While austerity policies remain in place and big business refuses to invest, the capitalist crisis will continue. I therefore call for measures to defend jobs and services, including nationalisation of companies and industries. As long as the capitalist system remains in place cooperatives face competition from profit maximising firms and therefore face pressures on the services they provide, the pay and conditions of their workers and their democratic structures. I feel therefore that it is essential workers in cooperatives have full trade union rights, and that democracy in cooperatives that brings workers and consumers to the heart of decision-making in the firms be defended."@en1
