"We voted in favour of these reports today even though we were disappointed that towed caravans would not be exempted from the roadworthiness test. My view is that all trailers under 3.5 tonnes, including caravans, should be exempt from the MOT test, along with tractors that are solely working in an agricultural capacity. I was successful in getting support for the tractor exemption, and for an increase in the threshold so that trailers under 2 000 kg would not be subject to MOT testing. However I could not get a majority to agree with me on exempting caravans. In today’s vote the UK Labour delegation voted against the inclusion of caravans because we feel there is very little evidence to indicate that the present system is not working and because most caravanners take great care in looking after their vehicles. We voted in favour of the reports as a whole because we do believe that improving vehicle checks will help to save lives on the roads in Europe. I also believe Parliament has got it right with the mandatory testing for motorcycles. This is already the case in the UK and evidence shows that countries who have introduced tests for motorcycles have seen a positive effect on safety."@en1
