"Mr President, this week marks the 25th anniversary of the Piper Alpha tragedy. On 6[nbsp ]July 1988, a series of explosions on the Piper Alpha oil and gas platform turned the rig into an inferno. One hundred and sixty-seven men lost their lives and only 59 men survived. The Piper Alpha tragedy is still today not just Europe’s but also the world’s most deadly off-shore disaster. It is therefore fitting that this House remember those who lost their lives in the North Sea. As one of the survivors said: ‘Piper has never left me; it was yesterday and will always be yesterday.’ That is why we should always support the highest standards in health and safety, especially in the off-shore environment. Only yesterday a crane on the Brent Charlie platform and some of its support structures were damaged. No one was injured and an investigation has been launched. To conclude, we should never forget the Piper Alpha disaster and we should do all we can across the EU and the world to ensure that such a disaster never happens again."@en1
