"This report proposes a series of amendments to the EU Roadworthiness Package that would see light commercial vehicles subject to technical roadside inspections using mobile inspection units or test centres. Parliament may not be aware of this but in the UK we already have a procedure for testing road vehicle safety – the great British institution that is the MOT. And this is a procedure that has worked perfectly well for us to date. So, why should we in the UK be forced to replace, or at the very least modify our existing, perfectly effective and reliable system by one imposed on us by the EU? Furthermore, why should we be forced to impose this new system on an industry that is already heavily under strain as a result of excessive taxing and incredibly high fuel prices? British lorry drivers are losing their jobs and haulage companies are going out of business at a rate of knots and the very last thing they need is to be tied up in yet more unnecessary EU red tape such as that proposed in this report."@en1
