"Mr President, thank you for accommodating so many of us this afternoon. This is an appalling vista. Just reading the motion for a resolution makes it clear that we have a big problem on our hands: ‘whereas the persecution of, and violence against, the Rohingya minority continue to intensify, most notably through the destruction of property and places of worship, mass arrests, arbitrary imprisonment, torture, rape, and restrictions on freedom of movement, marriage rights and access to education’.
I do not think that the European Union will be able to solve this, but we do need to use all of our resources to try to get a short term solution, but more importantly a long-term solution. As an Irish playwright once wrote: ‘Joxer, th’ whole worl’s in a terrible state o’ chassis’. Hopefully we can help these unfortunate Rohingya people as a matter of priority. Thank you also for your kind words about the Irish Presidency."@en1
