"Mr President, yesterday I spoke in this Chamber about the need for consistency in Europe advancing human rights with regard to our strategic partners, and today we name Russia as a prime example. The past 12 months have seen the worst government crack-down on civil society in Russia’s post-Soviet history. Today we call for the repeal of the ‘foreign agents’ law which seeks to discredit and demonise groups like Golos and ADC Memorial by clearly seeking to label them as spies and as traitors.
I ask the Commissioner to answer at the end of this debate: Given this legislation, how we can maintain our own EU dialogue with Russian civil society? Or will we stand aside as it disappears altogether?
I join with all of those in this debate protesting against Russia’s draft law banning information about so-called ‘non-traditional’ sexuality. Sexual orientation is not a tradition: it is a right. The three homophobic murders in Russia, reported in May, show it is a right under fatal threat."@en1
