"Mr President, the largest portion of the increment in the Brussels budget is this extension of the European External Action Service; but that is plainly not enough for colleagues in this House. We have just heard Mr Posselt say that there should not be national ambassadors from the 27 Member States, there should only be one, and we should have one EU representative. Well, he will no doubt be very happy by what is happening already. I was recently in my native Lima. The British Embassy there had a total of 15 staff, including the native people, the driver and the receptionist and so on. The EU Embassy there had 55 diplomatic personnel. We are creating hundreds of people, all on salaries higher than our national prime ministers, all over the world. It has become almost an end in itself. I noticed an extraordinary statistic the other day: when Lord Salisbury was Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, arguably at the height of our imperial power, we had a total of 52 diplomatic staff on the payroll. Just run that figure past what is happening in the EU and you will see how far we have drifted from principles of fiscal sense and prudence."@en1
