"Mr President, no one can fail to have been touched by the pictures of those who are suffering as a result of this crisis, but we also have to learn the lessons from the crisis and what caused the crisis in the first place. Too many governments across the world, including in the EU, spent more money than they had coming in. We also had a banking crisis, but on top of that you have struggled to keep the eurozone together. There are two solutions to solving the euro crisis. The first is to let those weaker countries go, devalue and be more competitive, which would allow those countries to create jobs and wealth for their citizens. The alternative is a one-size-fits-all policy aimed at keeping all those countries in, no matter what the price. That seems to be the price you, as European policymakers and those that support the eurozone, are prepared to pay. It is all very well shedding tears about the citizens of those countries, but when you pursue a one-size-fits-all eurozone policy, the implication of this policy is the poverty that we are seeing in all these EU countries."@en1
