"Mr President, I voted in favour of this report for an EU Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived. I do not believe emergency provisions should ever be considered by policymakers as a sustainable or permanent solution to the effect of poverty. However, it is unfortunately becoming a necessary lifeline in countries such as Ireland for those struggling on the margins of society.
This new fund will replace the previous aid scheme for the most deprived. It is right that the Commission should continue with the principle of providing at least some of the basic and essential services for the most deprived. After all, it is the Commission and its Troika cronies’ failed austerity policies implemented by governments, such as in the south of Ireland, which have caused such pain and hardship in recent years. As the levels of poverty continue to rise across Europe, we must show solidarity with those most in need."@en1
