"Mr President, social policy is a Member State competence. Any food aids for our deprived populations should be funded by national welfare programmes. We do not need a one-size-fits-all EU social policy because, let us not forget, it is a one-size-fits-all EU economic policy which got us into this mess. Without the disaster that is the euro we would have had many fewer people in need of food aid.
In Greece thousands are reliant on handouts of donated food, unused medicine and clothes to survive. The Spanish Red Cross is supporting three million Spaniards with food aid, and last month a container of hundreds of tons of food and provisions left London for Cyprus, having been collected by the Cypriot community in my constituency. The EU is in need of urgent reform. We need a competitive, flexible EU which works for the interests of the citizens, not an EU which wastes money on high-minded projects such as this."@en1
