"I support this report because the EETS has not been a success and we need to put practical and workable solutions in place. However, I would like to draw your attention to a very important concern for transport operators and transport companies in some Member States, in particular more peripheral ones like Ireland. Increased charges will put Irish road hauliers at a severe disadvantage. The UK is introducing a road user charge and while UK and Northern Ireland hauliers will receive some type of rebate, Irish hauliers will not. This will significantly increase costs, and then further charges on the EU mainland will exacerbate the problem even further. In many ways, these changes will be a barrier to free trade and will, in a way, be like the introduction of tariffs – the very thing that the creation of the single market is meant to avoid. For Ireland’s agricultural exports this will be a severe blow as the weight and volume of those exports is significant, therefore increasing the cost of transport substantially. This matter cannot be ignored any longer and we need to find solutions that do not damage export-driven economies such as Ireland."@en1
