"I supported the general thrust of this report. Yes, I know that housing is a Member State competence, but social housing is very much part of social inclusion and will contribute to achieving some of the objectives of the EU 2020 strategy. While I do agree that the right to housing should be recognised in EU primary law, some of the suggestions we made to Member States in this report should be acted upon. I believe that Member States must be proactive when it comes to evictions following seizures of homes by banks and encourage the use of ‘long lease’ arrangements to facilitate social housing, and that priority must be given to vulnerable persons in allocating social housing. I also supported the introduction of socio-economic indicators into the European Semester. If we do not measure the social impact of our economic policy, then we are blindly implementing policy that is not evidence-based – this is a bad practice which will lead to bad policy choices."@en1
