"I am delighted that my report has been approved and I wish to record my sincere thanks to the Fisheries Secretariat, to the Commission, to fisheries administrations in various Member States and to stakeholders, specifically individual fishermen, as well as their representative bodies for assisting in the delivery of what I hope is an improved plan. This is not a perfect solution to the issues faced in these fisheries, but I hope it does represent a significant step in the right direction. It is disappointing for me as well as those that helped draft my report and our professional fishermen that, because of the separate legal challenges brought by the Parliament and the Commission against the Council in respect of who has competency for certain aspects of policy as part of the Lisbon Alignment Process, it seems the amended plan is unlikely to progress to implementation in the near future. As a result fishermen will continue to suffer but, as STECF pointed out, the cod stock will continue to suffer, thus further highlighting yet again that, despite all of the talk about promotion of sustainable fisheries in this place, especially in the past few weeks in relation to the CFP, it is politics that take precedence over actual pragmatic and sustainable fisheries policy."@en1
