"There is still some uncertainty over the health risks associated with technology that produces electromagnetic fields (EMFs), such as mobile phones, MRI scanners and personal computers. In 2004 legislation was adopted setting maximum exposure limits to EMFs for workers but this raised some concerns about how it would impact on health workers ability to operate MRI scanners. As a result, the implementation of the 2004 legislation was postponed to allow for further consultation, and new legislation was drafted, which we voted on today. I fully support limiting workers’ exposure to EMFs. We already know that exposure has short-term effects on the human body, but research on possible long-term effects is inconclusive. It is therefore important that we exercise caution and take steps to limit potential harm until we know more. However, I am also aware of the hugely important role of MRI technology in the delivery of healthcare, and therefore support the exception for workers using this for healthcare and research purposes. I am pleased that the report also includes a provision that the Commission will take further action if evidence proving long-term health risks associated with EMFs comes to light."@en1
