"I welcome the adoption of the new EU rules seeking to better protect workers from harmful electromagnetic radiation in the workplace. These new rules will be of particular benefit to nurses and doctors giving patients magnetic resonance imaging scans (MRI), people working with radar, welders and workers repairing power lines. They will require employers to give exposed workers and their representatives necessary information and training, particularly relating to the outcome of risk assessment of possible harmful electromagnetic radiation, the measures taken by the employer, safe working practices, the detection of adverse effects and the circumstances in which workers are entitled to health checks. The new rules also foresee specific provisions to protect pregnant women and workers who wear an Active Implantable Medical Device (AIMD) such as pacemakers. I welcome in particular the guarantee that, if long-term effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields are discovered, the Commission will consider appropriate European legislation. I would now urge all Member States to transpose this new directive before the agreed deadline of 1 July 2016."@en1
