"Mr President, I commend the work carried out by my colleague, Mr Garcés Ramón, in reaction to the Commissioner’s draft European consumer agenda. In a context in which increasing poverty and difficult social and economic conditions are leading to widely different levels of access to basic goods and services, we must keep in mind more than ever that consumer rights vis-à-vis the market are not sufficient to ensure that our citizens’ essential needs are being met. If we do not, consumer rights for those most affected by inequality will be meaningless, so we must prioritise the enforcement of financial regulations to step up vigilance of banking and other lenders’ practices, as these have a really big impact on the lives of consumers facing financial difficulty and, in particular, mortgage distress. The banking sector will simply save that not-unprecedented cost by taxpayers. They had been enjoying emergency ECB assistance for years and must not be allowed to further punish customers facing hardship due to circumstances beyond their control."@en1
