"Mr President, I of course support calls for the EU to put more impetus into finding a political solution, and I support those colleagues who have argued that we need to do more to aid refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq. However, I want to use my very brief intervention to highlight the plight of the Palestinians, who, despite being neutral in this conflict, have been disproportionately affected.
Generations of Palestinians have moved to Syria: after 1948, after 1967 and, most recently, from Iraq in 2003. It is now estimated that over 400 000 Palestinians have had to flee from Syria. Jordan has now closed its border to Palestinians and Lebanon has introduced expensive visa requirements and barriers to work. Palestinians again depend disproportionately on aid, and the UN Works and Relief Agency provides virtually all the health care, shelter, education and food for the Palestinians who are fleeing. I hope we can do more to help everyone involved in this crisis but, in particular, I hope we can do more to help the vulnerable Palestinian community and increase our aid to UNWRA."@en1
