"I supported this report, as I believe it is important that the European Commission’s Audiovisual Media Services Directive – which governs the coordination of national legislation on audiovisual media in all Member States – is enforced in an effective manner. There have been many positive aspects to the Commission’s implementation of this Directive up to now, particularly with regard to the balanced approach it has taken to influence the development of the market at a time of rapid technological evolution. However, there is certainly room for improvement, with a lack of uniformity across Member States and an unsatisfactory and much delayed monitoring process hindering the advancement of this Directive. Other areas for improvement include accessibility issues, the promotion of cultural diversity in the media and the protection of consumers, especially minors. It is vital that EU guidelines on national media laws aim to combat discrimination in the audiovisual sphere and safeguard media pluralism."@en1
