"An estimated EUR 1 trillion is lost to tax fraud and tax avoidance across the EU every year. The UK Government has been talking big on tackling tax evasion recently, but their actions simply do not back this up. However, at a time when ordinary people are being subjected to public sector cuts and rising unemployment, it is more important than ever that we take steps to make sure everyone is paying their fair share of tax. This is why I have supported this own initiative report, which calls for greater clarity and transparency in companies’ tax arrangements, including the requirement for them to publish a single figure for the amount of tax paid in each Member State. The report also includes provisions for an EU-wide blacklist of tax havens and automatic sharing of banking information, and to ensure regulators have strong powers to deal with tax fraud. Labour MEPs did, however, vote against a paragraph of the report that called for a form of tax harmonisation across the EU. I hope the Commission will take this report from Parliament into account when it comes forward with proposals on tax transparency later this year."@en1
