"Given the recent threats to media freedom in certain Member States, I fully support the recommendations in this report, which calls on the Commission to monitor the status of media freedom across the EU on an annual basis. The Commission should work with individual Member States to improve national laws regulating journalistic freedom and designed to prevent intimidation of the press. Journalists should have the right to operate without pressure from owners, publishers or political lobbies; an ethical, independent press is a good indicator of a healthy, robust democracy. Avoiding monopolies of ownership is of particular significance in the UK, particularly in the light of the Leveson inquiry, so it is extremely important that Member States avoid dominant positions in the media market and promote pluralism at all times."@en1
