"Almost three quarters of Europe’s exports are made up of industrial goods. Industry provides direct employment jobs for over 50 million people and indirect employment for another 100 million across Europe. Since the start of the crisis, over three million jobs have been lost in European industry. However, countries with a strong industrial sector such as Germany and Austria have managed the crisis better than those with a smaller industrial sector. And former industrial regions such as Manchester in the UK, Lille in France, Essen and the Ruhr in Germany, and Bilbao in Spain show that it is possible to use EU funding and support to become modern industrial regions. Europe needs to develop a smart industrial policy that encourages traditional sectors to grow while at the same time investing in high-tech and innovative approaches. This should encompass the development of regional strategies for industrial areas. I would urge the Commission and the Member States to act now on the positive recommendations set out in this resolution."@en1
