"As the daily crowds around the Romanian embassy in Chisinau suggest, many Moldovans are desperate to leave their country, if only temporarily, to see more of the world, and to experience other cultures, as tourists and students, as is the right of all Europeans. It is only an accident of history that Moldova ended up on the wrong side of the USSR, and its rightful place is to join its close cultural cousin Romania in the European family. Moldova has worked hard to implement reforms, and the Commission rightly gave it a positive progress report in return; it is therefore highly welcome that Parliament should make access to the EU easier for those Moldovan travellers who wish to enjoy what Schengen countries have to offer. As a member of a non-Schengen state, I feel obliged to abstain on this specific report, but I look forward to monitoring Moldova’s progress as it edges closer towards European integration and, we hope, eventual EU candidate status."@en1
