"I voted in favour of this proposal as it provides for a means by which child support obligations can be enforced against a debtor resident in a third country. The Hague Convention on the International Recovery of Child Support and Other Forms of Family Maintenance (November 2007) aims to make it easier to claim child support payments from a parent who lives in a different country. Some parents face huge bureaucratic difficulties when chasing child support from someone who lives in a different country due to language barriers and varying legal systems. This proposal aims to reduce the red tape for citizens, assisting the single market and free movement ethos. Parliament has already approved the Convention but, with this vote, MEPs will be signing-off on its adoption into law under normal legislative protocol. Ireland is also currently drafting statutory legislation to give statutory effect to the Convention."@en1
