"Mr President, I voted against the granting of discharge for all the European agencies. I accept that many of these agencies do good work. Indeed, they do vital work on behalf of both the Commission and Parliament. In fact, much of our work would not be possible without the agencies’ participation. But that does not mean that they should be given a free ride or a clean sheet. I will use the EEA as an example. There are many questions that remain unanswered. There is a lack of consistency in the control measures that are in place. In the case of the EEA, there have been shortcomings in recruitment procedures, higher-than-usual travel costs and questions left open around conflicts of interest. I believe many improvements could be made, including exploring options for amalgamations and joint working, which would lead to cost savings for all European taxpayers. Until we have a full review of agencies, their activities and more consistency, I will continue to vote against discharge."@en1
