"Although these reports dealing with the prudential supervision of financial firms (CRR and CRD IV) contain some welcome reforms to liquidity requirements, capital requirements, leverage ratios and corporate governance, I abstained as these provisions are a mere pale reflection of what is needed. These provisions will do nothing to rein in the domination of the financial markets and will not even clip the wings of casino capitalism. I welcome the restrictions introduced on the bonuses of senior bankers. However the reports do nothing to prevent enormous salaries for senior bankers and contain enough flexibility to allow the obnoxious, short sighted and reckless bonus culture to continue unabated. In order to make a real difference to the financial sector, the banks must be nationalised under democratic public control and ownership. The financial system could then, as part of a planned economy, be put at the service of the needs of working people and the redevelopment of the economy in the interests of the majority."@en1
