"Mr President, I am pleased to be able to support the compromise allowing the deadline for African, Caribbean and Pacific countries to conclude their economic partnership agreements with the EU to be extended to 1 October 2014. We must allow this extra time for negotiations to reach their conclusion rather than accept failure.
However, I must stress the importance of making sure these negotiations make real progress. Not only is the current situation incompatible with WTO rules, but it is also unfair towards countries that have fulfilled the criteria and ratified their agreements, as well as those countries that are not ACP partners. It is also in the interest of the ACP countries in question to conclude their negotiations as soon as possible for the benefit of their own economies.
I firmly believe the economic partnership agreements are a vital factor in supporting development across the world by promoting regional integration into the global economy, as well as by supporting reforms that boost developing economies."@en1
