"While I must state at the outset that I am a believer in anti-smoking policies, including Ireland’s highly progressive policy of banning smoking in all workplaces – the first of its kind globally – I am also cognisant of the fact that strengthening national and EU legislation against smoking will naturally have a severe impact on workers in the EU tobacco sector. As a result, I agree with Parliament’ decision to back Austria’ EGF application for the 2011 redundancies in Austria Tabak GmbH. Interestingly, the Commission notes that ‘Austria justifies the request for EGF support by the particular situation of the cross-border area where the redundancies happened...Many workers from Slovakia (and also from Hungary) take up work on the Austrian side of the cross-border area as the salary levels are higher than at home’. Providing EGF funding for these workers is therefore a tailor-made European solution to a European open market problem. It is appropriate and timely to use this example as further proof – not that it is needed at this point, such is the compelling body of evidence – that the EGF has a genuine purpose to serve in this era of mass unemployment and austerity."@en1
