"Mr President, the Tory/Liberal coalition in the United Kingdom has introduced a draconian bedroom tax which affects some of the most vulnerable citizens, such as children and the disabled. One of my constituents – a Mr Purser from Motherwell, who was recently made unemployed and who looks after his son at weekends – is directly impacted by this measure, as he will now be charged for the room which his child uses. Mr Purser is unemployed and cannot afford the charge.
What does he do? Does he fall into debt? Does he give up on seeing his child? As UK citizens are also EU citizens, and as this bedroom tax affects families and, more importantly, children and their rights to have a relationship with both parents, is the UK Government breaking Article 3 of the consolidated EU Treaties, given that Article 3.1 says that the Union’s aim is to promote the well-being of its people and that Article 3.3 says that the protection of the rights of the child must be upheld? I would argue that in both these points the UK Government is failing to uphold these rights, and I ask the Commission to investigate this as a matter of urgency."@en1
