lpv:spoken text	"Mr President, the horrific process of symphysiotomy consists of a surgical procedure whereby a woman’s pelvic bone is sawn in half during childbirth in order to deliver the baby. Whilst this may sound like a form of torture straight out of the Dark Ages, this was the method used in Ireland to deliver babies in the 20th century as an alternative to Caesarean sections. Some obstetricians believed the latter to be a form of contraception. It is estimated that, between 1944 and 1992, 1 500 women were subjected to symphysiotomies, and many say they were performed without their prior knowledge or consent. Decades later, these women are still experiencing chronic pain and traumatic flashbacks from these procedures. The Irish Government owes them an unreserved and full apology. Given the EU-Irish Presidency, the Irish Government should support the Sinn Féin TD’s initiative to waive the statute of limitations to pursue those responsible for these barbaric acts."@en1
