"Mr President, this Saturday Norwich Disabled People Against Cuts will organise an open-air demonstration in their pyjamas, showing how nearly GBP 1 billion of cuts to social care literally deprives them of the services to be able to get out of bed.
According to the Essex Coalition of Disabled People, one in four disabled people are losing Britain’s Disability Living Allowance in so-called fit-for-work tests, which no less than 6 % of doctors say have driven their patients to attempt suicide. Now our government is introducing a bedroom tax, two in three of those suffering being disabled people or their carers – over 31 000 people in my own East of England constituency.
Across Britain, according to the Centre for Welfare reform, disabled people make up 8 % of the population but are bearing 29 % of the cuts. In Britain disabled people are denied services to get out of bed but are being taxed more, simply for staying there. Severely disabled people are being told they are fit for work by a government that is unfit for office and a benefit called Disability Living Allowance is being withdrawn and disabled people are losing the will to live."@en1
