"Mr President, although the United Kingdom does not appear to be in danger of diminished representation, this proposal must be roundly condemned. There can be few better examples of how undemocratic the European Union is. In the various schemes that are mooted in this report, it is the medium-sized countries that will be downgraded. MEPs of other countries will dictate the terms of downgrading for the medium-sized countries concerned, yet if their voters are dissatisfied with those who have voted for their downgrade, they cannot remove them at the ballot box. Likewise, any Member of the European Council, safe in their own country, is immune from democratic accountability. Undemocratic is the kindest word for this; gerrymandering is the reality. Now we hear of proposals to force the UK to hold its elections on a Sunday, to force the use of European political party names and to dictate the contents of political broadcasts. Go ahead: just see how that plays to the people of the UK. This is no democratic institution, but it is an elective dictatorship."@en1
