"Firstly, I firmly reject – and indeed resent – the accusation that I am being partisan. What we are seeking to do is to be as constitutional in our approach as pragmatically possible. That is not pure and that is not mathematical. I do hope we can achieve that in the future. If I can explain, the difference in terms of population between Sweden and Hungary is 475 000 people, and we do not feel that this small distinction in population merits two MEPs. The difference between Austria and Sweden is a million people and that more credibly and fairly merits that gap. I am not responsible for population growth in Sweden or Austria, or indeed anywhere else; I am just asking people to look at the figures. As for the British position, as you know, pragmatically at present we are not proposing an increase or a reduction of its Members but, should we agree upon a mathematical formula, you will see that France, Britain and Spain will grow in terms of the number of their Members of the European Parliament."@en1
