lpv:spoken text	"The proposals for the regulation of the EU’s agricultural production are retrograde and damaging. No one ought to be nostalgic for milk lakes and butter mountains, yet that is the backward direction in which the rapporteur wishes to travel. I am particularly concerned about proposals for the sugar market. The most recent EU sugar reforms failed to achieve their objectives of reducing sugar prices and increasing competition. The average sugar price in the EU has increased 64 % since last year. Moreover, traditional cane refiners are finding it difficult to compete with beet processors. The Commission has single-mindedly refused to admit that it got it wrong and introduce measures which would help consumers and allow cane refiners not only to survive, but to flourish. Europe needs a sugar market which embraces both cane and beet. We need a competitive arena to keep costs down. This means ensuring that cane refiners and beet processors have a level playing field. The current proposals queer the pitch in favour of beet. Until cane refiners receive parallel terms of access to raw material, I cannot support this legislation. Four thousand five hundred jobs across Europe, including in London, are depending on our making the right choice."@en1
