"Mr President, Commissioner, I am disappointed by these proposals. If they are accepted in their current form, they will, firstly, reverse the direction of travel of the industry over the past two reforms. Secondly, they will do very little to address the growing challenge of food security. Thirdly, they do nothing to help with the simplification of the common agricultural policy. No one doubts the importance of an environmentally-sound, biodiverse countryside. But what we cannot accept is that it should be achieved at the expense of – not in support of – a sound competitive and productive agriculture sector. By returning to coupling and intervention, it reinvents all the old bad habits of the common agricultural policy. We shall go back to food mountains; we shall go back to supporting inefficiency, and we shall not be meeting the challenges of the future."@en1
