"Madam President, the crisis cannot be allowed to undermine the goal of a more equal Europe, but there has been no serious consideration at European level of the impact of the crisis on women. Women make up 70 % of public sector employees across Europe. They are consequently disproportionately affected by reductions in public service employment levels. Also, women tend to use public services more, and cutbacks in these services are more likely to affect women than men. So we need to integrate a gender dimension into all our policies aimed at recovery, and I am calling on the Commission to propose specific gender equality targets in its macroeconomic and employment guidelines. It should include the gender equality dimension in its efforts to promote social investment, and it should table a draft directive which would be needed to reduce the gender pay gap, which currently stands at 16 %. Member States should be encouraged to carry out gender impact assessments on fiscal consolidation measures. The crisis is more likely to have a lasting impact on female employment, thus jeopardising in the long term the progress which has been made in the field of gender equality."@en1
