"I have voted in support of this report as I consider corporate social responsibility vital for future of the European economy. The approach adopted in the text is one which recognises the benefits that an effective, non-bureaucratic approach can deliver. In contrast to the Howitt report, which I voted against, this text makes clear that, while it remains for public authorities to promote and monitor social and environmental standards, we need a business-led solution to implementing CSR requirements. The report is careful to note that voluntary solutions should be the first approach to be taken in this area, and that any measures should not increase red tape. I believe that charity and social responsibility are voluntary acts that should not be regulated or enforced."@en1
