"It is very rare that I vote in favour of a report on the EU budget. But, for once, I am able to accept these proposals because they actually call for a freeze in EU expenditure. This is only proper when Member States are facing cuts in their national budgets. But we need to go further. We need to root out inefficiencies and put an end to unnecessary expenditure. In order to fairly represent our citizens, MEPs need to make cuts to the parliament’s budget including addressing the question of their own allowances. We need to reduce staff numbers and index the retirement age of officials to life expectancy. We need to get rid of expensive vanity projects such as the 56-million-euro House of European History. The rapporteur also calls on Parliament to reduce the number of business trips its officials make. Yet it fails to make a bold recommendation which would save Parliament €180 million a year. And that recommendation would be, of course, to scrap Strasbourg."@en1
