"I was pleased to support this resolution. I think that violence against women, of any kind, is an abomination that all Member States should work to eliminate. I did vote against the paragraph calling for an EU directive. Implementation should remain in the hands of the member states. We must resist the temptation to believe that ‘more Europe’ is the answer to every problem. A directive would do nothing to tackle the ongoing scourge of gender-based violence. Of course, resolutions such as this are no substitute for concrete action to tackle the underlying problems that give rise to acts such as genital mutilation, ‘honour’ crimes, and forced marriage. Member States should be encouraged to address those important issues."@en1
