"Mr President, I am glad that Mr Grzyb referred to the Respect Index in Poland. The socially responsible investment (SRI) sector and indices do have an important role to play, but what I point out is that mainstream investors are changing, and are now drivers for this agenda.
I agree with Mr Lange, Ms Grèze, Ms Dăncilă, quoting Bangladesh and Guatemala and Nigeria, that we must never forget the victims of corporate abuse. Indeed, in our vote tomorrow, the sensitive issue of access to justice should not be forgotten.
As far as Ms Sinclaire is concerned, talking about supposedly vague guidelines, the guidelines on the ICT sector on extractive industries and employment agencies, and indeed on small businesses, brought forward by Commissioner Tajani and his staff are not vague at all, they are rather helpful.
Although I agree with Mr Bicep and others that responsible business must be for all sizes of company, I place on record my agreement with all those who say there must be special protection for small and medium-sized enterprises. No one wants unnecessary administrative burdens.
To Ms Benarab-Attou, who says that we should not need two committees to work together, if companies can work with many stakeholders, two committees of this Parliament can work together.
To Ms Göncz, who says we should talk about morality: we should, just as Mr Tajani and Mr Becker talk about values. We should not be frightened to utter these words.
Ms Bildt says consumer empowerment is important. She is right, but disclosure will empower consumers. I particularly praise the emphasis on increased attention on the social dimension and on transparency from not only the centre-right – Ms Bastos and Mr Boulland – but also the centre-left – Ms Regner, Mr Steinruck and myself. I am pleased with that consensus.
Finally, Mr Murphy talks about one Shakespeare play. I think we should be about quantifying CSR. I say to you, ‘Measure for Measure’.
Ms Hirsch asks whether this is the beginning of the end. No; CSR is now embedded in the European Union and its institutions. It is the end of the beginning."@en1
