"Mr President, there is a world shortage of food and consumers are being hurt by rising prices. I believe we need a market-based system and that farmers should rely less on the taxpayer. This has to include the outermost regions of the Union. I cannot accept that this Parliament has increased the Commission’s budgetary-neutral position by EUR 70 million a year. However, if we are to fund farmers in the Caribbean and Atlantic, let us make sure they are pulling their weight. The French overseas departments have a quota for sugar cane of 432 000 tonnes, yet they produce just over half of this. The result? Shortages. The effect? Sugar prices in Europe are now 80% higher than in the rest of the world.
The Commission needs to include imports of sugar cane in its strategy to reduce prices. As well as protecting agriculture in the Caribbean, we should protect jobs in other sectors and ensure that industry, as well as farmers, can compete."@en1
