"Madam President, I would like to bring to this Chamber’s attention the rising number of cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Europe. Whilst I am aware that Commissioner Reding is working on this, I believe we, as MEPs, have a duty to put this issue on the agenda immediately.
Female genital mutilation is a horrific and violent act committed against young girls and children. FGM was criminalised in the UK in 1985. Yet in the past 28 years there has not been one single prosecution in Britain. I recently met a women’s human rights advocate who has been working on FGM in the UK for over 30 years. She told me that the UK was regarded as a soft touch. Well, it is time to get tough. France, for example, whilst not having specific FGM legislation, has had hundreds of prosecutions against parents who have let their daughters be butchered in this way.
I look to other MEPs to join me in the fight against this form of violence, to share their experience and data and to move towards eliminating this practice in all Member States."@en1
