"It is essential that, with a rapidly ageing population and with the effects of savage austerity being felt by the most vulnerable, we seek to protect older people from the very real risk of social exclusion. Sidelining older people in society simply cannot be allowed. We must ensure that as much is done as possible to include them in the decision-making process. Older people are an asset to our society and not a burden. OFMDFM’s small grants scheme last year to promote mutual respect and solidarity between the generations is a great example of what should be done to aid the inclusion of older people. It is also fantastic that in Northern Ireland we have our own Commissioner for Older People, Claire Keatinge, and an Older People’s Parliament. It is something to be proud of in Northern Ireland that we can be highlighted as a case of best practice in this area. I commend the work done to ensure older people remain equal participants in society."@en1
