"Mr President, SMEs account for 98% of all European firms, providing over 100 million jobs. Without doubt, they are the backbone of the European economy. In Ireland the 230 000 SMEs are crucial to the recovery of the domestic economy. Yet in Ireland there is an SME loan rejection rate of 24%. That is the second highest in Europe. Clearly, action is needed.
The Commission’s Action Plan is welcome, in that it provides for improving access to finance for SMEs, but there are areas where the report could be strengthened. I commend the rapporteur for some of the recommendations made. It is extremely important that SMEs in the Member States do benefit from the recently approved EUR 10 billion increase in European Investment Bank capital. SMEs must be targeted and assisted in accessing that funding, for example by expanding schemes such as the Progress Microfinance initiative. Parliament’s resolution strengthens the Commission’s proposals. I urge the Commission to implement its recommendations."@en1
