"Mr President, SMEs account for 98 % of all EU businesses. They provide 67 % of all private sector employment. They are responsible for 85 % of all new jobs in the European Union. They are quite clearly the backbone of our economies. Providing the right circumstances for their viability is essential for our growth, and access to finance must therefore be a top priority for us. We need to improve provision, process and access to information on financing instruments for SMEs. Even larger businesses struggle to find the information they require. What chance can there be for SMEs in those circumstances? As an MEP I get inquiries all the time and I have now had to go away and produce a leaflet for businesses to distribute to them, electronically and otherwise, directing them where they can go. We need to have a much wider approach. I come from a nation of shopkeepers. We must think small first, and exclude SMEs from burdens unless the benefits outweigh those burdens."@en1
