"Hundreds of workers are killed each year across South Asia in fires in the workplace, with the most recent disaster taking place in a factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where 112 people tragically lost their lives. Alarming figures show that in Bangladesh alone, 600 garment workers have been killed in factory fires since 2005. The European market is the largest export destination for Bangladeshi garments and textiles and I believe we have a clear responsibility to make sure that workers manufacturing clothes for the European market are being properly protected. I support calls for the Governments of Bangladesh and Pakistan to put in place health and safety legalisation to help protect workers and I welcome the work taking place between the Bangladesh Fire and Safety Agreement and Trade Unions to improve safety standards at production sites. Finally, I firmly support the proposal to promote responsible conduct among EU companies operating aboard and to make sure there are strict rules in place to make sure international standards are met in the areas of human rights, labour and environment."@en1
