"Mr President, there have been a number of fires in South Asia regarding factory workers, particularly in garment factories. One was in Pakistan. Today we had this terrible report on what happened in Bangladesh. We also have to recognise that the government of Bangladesh has taken notice of what has happened and has put in place great measures to ameliorate the damage done. Each of the families who suffered has received compensation from the government, from the Prime Minister herself, of something like USD 7 500, and the Ministry of Labour and Employment has put in place the implementation of the Bangladesh Labour Act which implements fire precautions. Over 1 300 workers at the fire-ravaged fashion company have received five months’ salary, so they are conscious of the tragedy that has happened.
