"A Uachtaráin, cuirim fáilte roimh an deis seo cur in aghaidh an chomhaontaithe trádála an athuair. The Commissioner’s own impact assessment concluded that European farmers will experience heavy losses under a Mercosur trade deal yet the Commission is committed to sacrificing them in the interests of manufacturing gains. The Commission states that the gains made in the manufacturing sector would outweigh the losses to the EU agri-food sector. However, the results demonstrate clearly that the economic losses arising from a bilateral trade agreement would fall heavily on the agricultural sector with a big loss in farm jobs. The impact assessment singles Ireland out for significant losses in the beef sector and in general revenue losses from all agricultural activities per hectare of utilised agricultural area. Aside from the economic aspect of the security of a safe food supply which European farmers deliver, farming and agriculture are an integral part of rural communities and the rural way of life. Those that criticise opposition to this deal and label it as agricultural protectionism should realise agriculture is a growth sector. It is the backbone of economic recovery in Ireland and across the European Union and it is the cornerstone of food security into the future. Demand for food is going to soar in the coming years as the global population increases. Meeting this demand will further drive economic growth and will benefit not just rural communities but the EU as a whole. I urge EU leaders and you, Commissioner, not to sacrifice European agriculture, not to be blinded by the possible gains to be made in more attractive and popular sectors at the expense of our farmers and the agri-food sector."@en1
