"Madam President, I certainly welcome this oral question because of the ludicrous situation we now see at boarding gates where misinformed passengers – and not only misinformed passengers, but also those being picked on arbitrarily – are having rows with the staff. I have been involved in such a row myself, so I do know what this is about. We need some consistency. We also know that retail activities have increased at many airports, and excessive restrictions can be a problem there. I agree with the Commissioner that some differentiation does favour competition. So I favour some rules, but not over-stringent rules. What I think we should be looking for is a minimum upper limit. I do not think we can have a single upper limit, because the needs of low-cost and short-haul airlines are very different from those of long-haul operators. The fuselages are very different too, so you can carry a lot more baggage on long-haul flights. I think we need some rules, but they need to be light-touch and sensible."@en1
