"Madam President, there is a commercial relationship between the passenger and the airline, but it is not a relationship of equals involving a passenger who can choose from any airline in the world. As a previous speaker pointed out, many passengers have no choice. We all know that many airlines do not use this ‘one bag rule’ in the interests of passenger safety or passenger comfort but simply as a means of increasing their bottom line by forcing passengers into paying inflated fees for checked baggage. Of course there is a need for a unified system. But we also know that this is only one of the many Wild West practices that are used by airlines to increase their bottom line – with Ryanair, unfortunately, in the vanguard. Misleading advertising, poor customer service, rip-off credit card fees and less than straightforward websites were all pioneered by this airline. The philosophy of Ryanair is a raw expression of capitalist greed, maximising profit at any cost. This is also, of course, seen in the airline’s treatment of workers, with Ryanair operating a dictatorial, anti-union regime where staff are sacked for trying to organise a trade union. I would ask the Commissioner if he will deliver on this, or if he knows whether the Irish Government will deliver on its promises during the Lisbon Treaty campaign to introduce compulsory union recognition. Or will that go down as just another of the lies told during referendums in Ireland?"@en1
